This Carolina
During the recent analog to digital transition, I purchased a couple of those converter boxes to use with my older tv sets that are connected to an outdoor antenna. I discovered that channel 12, WXII in Winston-Salem has a sub-channel (12.2) called "This Carolina". The channel features movies and vintage tv shows from the MGM/United Artists library. It is the tv shows that I am most interested in. So far I have seen Sea Hunt,Bat Masterson,The Patty Duke Show and Mr. ED. The video quality of these shows is excellent. I have not seen these shows look so good since the sixties. If your tv is a newer model which is digital ready you can receive this channel via cable or traditional antenna. The off air digital signal you get from an antenna is far superior to any cable or satellite dish I have ever had. I have got my hopes up for the addition of more tv shows to the schedule.

Sometime during the first year, this show changed it's name to "Jubilee" , sponsored by Jim Walter Homes. Bonnie Lou and Buster Moore perfomed the sponsor jingle on each show. Their show ran for many years in this timeslot on WGHP. The ad is from May 17,1964.Thursday, May 7, 2009

Kirby Grant starred in this series as Sky King. His plane was named the "Songbird". This show from the fifties continued to air on WFMY channel 2 on Saturday mornings into the mid-sixties. One of my all-time favorites. The ad is from 1957.

Tarzan
My first opportunity to see a Tarzan movie came when I was in the third grade. It was during the 1961-62 TV season. I saw Tarzan Triumphs (1943) on WDBJ channel 7 Roanoke ,on the Wednesday night "Big Show" that aired at 7:30 p.m. that season. I would later get to see many more on WSOC Charlotte channel 9's "Jungle Theatre" on Sunday afternoons and beginning in October 1963, on WGHP channel 8 in High Point on "Adventure Theatre". I was very excited when WFMY made the decision to air the movies in primetime beginning on February 8,1974. During the first month the movies aired, the station started receiving complaints about how the natives were portrayed in these movies. I may be wrong, but I believe it was after the fourth week when "Tarzan's Secret Treasure" aired, that WFMY made the decision to end this movie festival.

Superman 1964

The Adventures of Superman, starring George Reeves as Clark Kent/Superman, returned to the Piedmont on Monday August 31,1964 after an absence of nearly five years. During the weeks leading up to the show returning, channel 12 promoted it very well, even during primetime. The commercial that the station made did not feature film footage. Rather, they used a montage of probably the best publicity photos from the show I have ever seen. It was an exciting Monday afternoon when "Superman on Earth" came on. This ad is from November 1964.

Wanted Dead or Alive 1964

The 'King of cool", Steve McQueen, starred as Josh Randall in Wanted Dead or Alive. We were lucky here in the Piedmont Golden Triangle viewing area. Channel 12 carried many great TV series in the afternoon and early evening, after their original network runs. This ad is from December 1964.
Cheyenne 1966

Warner Bros. Studios produced a bunch of TV westerns. Cheyenne was one of my favorites with Clint Walker starring as Cheyenne Bodie. This ad is from January 1966.

The Texan 1968

This ad is from October 2,1968. Timeless Media has released 70 episodes of this series in a 10 disc DVD set. I would rate this set as very good. When the credits roll at the end, some of the episodes have the original sponsor image intact, such as Viceroy cigarettes and Praise soap. Generally, it is those episodes that are the sharpest. When the show went into syndication, the sponsor image was replaced by the state of Texas. Which brings up another point. Timeless Media says that the show had not been seen since being re-run on the ABC network in 1962. That was not the case here in North Carolina. The show aired here in reruns each Wednesday night from early 1966 until the spring of 1969. Within that same timeframe the show also ran Monday through Friday on WNBE in New Bern,NC. The last confirmation I have for the show airing in Winston-Salem is on Saturday afternoons in 1970. It is hard to imagine that North Carolina was the only area that got the show in syndication.

Adventures of Superman

I have always been a huge fan of the Superman TV series starring George Reeves. These trading cards were produced by the Topps Company in 1965. You got five cards and a stick of gum for a nickel. Those were the days.
Yogi Bear Mug & Cereal Bowl

This is the inside cover of the Cheyenne comic. Yes, I did have a set of these. I loved getting those cereal premiums in the mail.
Cheyenne 1961

I grew up on a small farm about 8 miles west of the small town of Mount Airy,NC during the fifties and sixties. It was a real treat if we got a chance to go to town maybe once a month on a Saturday morning. Back then I would save up my nickels so I could buy and trade used comic books from a nice, elderly gentleman by the name of Bill Whitaker. His news stand was in a small room to the right of the entrance of the "Canteen". By the way, the Canteen had the best hamburgers in town and they served their bottles of "Pop" ice cold in the bottle, but that is a story for another time. Anyway I was going through some old stuff the other day and came across this old Cheyenne comic from 1961. It is the Oct/Nov issue #24. The comic brought back all those great memories of my days of dealing with Mr. Whitaker. If you click on the image to enlarge it, you can probably see the store stamp on the back cover. The original owner of the comic bought it new at Roses 5-10-25 cent store in Galax, Virginia. Bill Whitaker's news stand and the Canteen have been long gone. There is an alley decorated with greenery leading to one of the town's public parking lot's. The alley is where the building once stood.
