When channel 8 came on the air in October 1963,"Adventure Theatre" aired at 5:00 p.m. each weekday afternoon.There were times when the station tried something different,but it was so popular,they kept bringing it back again and again  through the summer of 1968.This ad is from February 26,1968.

Sea Hunt - WFMY 1958

This ad is from February 1958. Sea Hunt is currently airing on ThisTv which is broadcast on WXII 12.2 in Winston-Salem,NC.

WGHP - Oct.15,1963

Each weekday afternoon when my brothers and I got off the school bus,I would run in the house,turn on the tv and start turning the old VHF knob on our black and white set.I always hoped that one day there would be a new channel added.This was the day.It was 5:00 p.m.when the knob landed on channel 8,and there was Johnny Weissmuller starring as Tarzan in Tarzan and the Mermaids.I don't believe I have ever seen a crisper,sharper print of this movie than the one WGHP presented that day on "Adventure Theatre".In those early years of WGHP,they also aired The Little Rascals/Our Gang on "Kartoon Karnival " which aired on Saturday mornings. Amos'N Andy aired weekday evenings at 6:30.I have a soft spot for channel 8 because I got to see it when it first came on the air.Those were the days. I enjoy thinking about the history of tv in the Triad or as it was called back then,"the Piedmont Golden Triangle".

Daniel Boone

The ad is from 1966. In North Carolina, the show currently airs daily on the Retro Television Network.The channels are digital sub-channels of WHKY in Hickory,WRAZ in Raleigh and WWAY Wilmington. I purchased an outdoor antenna from a local distributor for $36,which allows me to receive the Hickory channel, and that surprised me as I am only a few miles from the VA,NC border. Remember when Maya aired on WSJS channel 12? The show starred Jay North ( Dennis The Menace). The ad is from September 1967.

Tarzan

My first opportunity to see a Tarzan movie came when I was in the third grade. It was during the 1961-62 TV season. I saw Tarzan Triumphs (1943) on WDBJ channel 7 Roanoke ,on the Wednesday night "Big Show" that aired at 7:30 p.m. that season. I would later get to see many more on WSOC Charlotte channel 9's "Jungle Theatre" on Sunday afternoons and beginning in October 1963, on WGHP channel 8 in High Point on "Adventure Theatre". I was very excited when WFMY made the decision to air the movies in primetime beginning on February 8,1974. During the first month the movies aired, the station started receiving complaints about how the natives were portrayed in these movies. I may be wrong,but I believe it was after the fourth week when "Tarzan's Secret Treasure" aired, that WFMY made the decision to end this movie festival.

Superman 1964

The Adventures of Superman, starring George Reeves as Clark Kent/Superman, returned to the Piedmont on Monday August 31,1964 after an absence of nearly five years. During the weeks leading up to the show returning, channel 12 promoted it very well, even during primetime. The commercial that the station made did not feature film footage. Rather, they used a montage of probably the best publicity photos from the show I have ever seen. It was an exciting Monday afternoon when "Superman on Earth" came on. This ad is from November 1964.
