The Texan 1968

This ad is from October 2,1968. Timeless Media has released 70 episodes of this series in a 10 disc DVD set. I would rate this set as very good. When the credits roll at the end, some of the episodes have the original sponsor image intact, such as Viceroy cigarettes and Praise soap. Generally, it is those episodes that are the sharpest. When the show went into syndication, the sponsor image was replaced by the state of Texas. Which brings up another point. Timeless Media says that the show had not been seen since being re-run on the ABC network in 1962. That was not the case here in North Carolina. The show aired here in reruns each Wednesday night from early 1966 until the spring of 1969. Within that same timeframe the show also ran Monday through Friday on WNBE in New Bern,NC. The last confirmation I have for the show airing in Winston-Salem is on Saturday afternoons in 1970. It is hard to imagine that North Carolina was the only area that got the show in syndication.

Adventures of Superman

I have always been a huge fan of the Superman TV series starring George Reeves. These trading cards were produced by the Topps Company in 1965. You got five cards and a stick of gum for a nickel. Those were the days.

Yogi Bear Mug & Cereal Bowl

This is the inside cover of the Cheyenne comic. Yes, I did have a set of these. I loved getting those cereal premiums in the mail.

Cheyenne 1961

I grew up on a small farm about 8 miles west of the small town of Mount Airy,NC during the fifties and sixties. It was a real treat if we got a chance to go to town maybe once a month on a Saturday morning. Back then I would save up my nickels so I could buy and trade used comic books from a nice, elderly gentleman by the name of Bill Whitaker. His news stand was in a small room to the right of the entrance of the "Canteen". By the way, the Canteen had the best hamburgers in town and they served their bottles of "Pop" ice cold in the bottle, but that is a story for another time. Anyway I was going through some old stuff the other day and came across this old Cheyenne comic from 1961. It is the Oct/Nov issue #24. The comic brought back all those great memories of my days of dealing with Mr. Whitaker. If you click on the image to enlarge it, you can probably see the store stamp on the back cover. The original owner of the comic bought it new at Roses 5-10-25 cent store in Galax, Virginia. Bill Whitaker's news stand and the Canteen have been long gone. There is an alley decorated with greenery leading to one of the town's public parking lot's. The alley is where the building once stood.

The Texan 1966

The ad is from July 13,1966. Rory Calhoun starred as Bill Longley. The series original run was on CBS from 1958-1960.
